Wigfach; to the Lighthouse

A short drive east, crossing the River Ogmore,
Deeper into the South- Glamorganshire countryside,
Up springs Nash Point Lighthouse.

Build from Blue Lias stone quarried from the beach below,
Winched up the cliff and dressed on site by accomplished masons.

Its light first shone in September 1832 and was extinguished in 1992.

Wigfach Beach Party

Brownies on the Beach

Saturday afternoon.

As we walk back a party of Brownies and their Troop Leaders arrive
Colours spread out across the sands.

Activity and shrieks of delight,
Backpacks strewn and excursions down to the water’s edge,
Fun, more fun and fresh air.

Wigfach: Treasures on the beach

A beach full of lovely things if you care to look
We have come to harvest.
Each day we haul seaweed in black bin liners.
This will be a tonic the garden in winter.

Every evening we examine our treasures;
A mermaid’s purse, a crab's shell, blue rope, green glass,
A cache of driftwood, smoother than silk,
Everything will be used or displayed on our return.

Wigfach; The changing sea

Each day we look out from the morning room,
Out to the water and across to the opposite coast.

A sea that is at one time clear and then vanishes from sight,
One time a sliver of silver, and next cerulean,
Then returns to grey.

The Sea, The Sea.

Wigfach: The Arrival

Friday, back from Fredericksburg.

We arrive at Hillcrest, our home again,
In thirty minutes, through the low woods and dunes
We are on the beach,
Rosie the puppy is excited, as we are to be back.

Shingle stones, a thousand different shades of brown and grey.

Grey skies to match and a warm wind,
Across the channel of water, that imitates the sky,
Thinly visible the coast of Somerset.

All of a sudden! A flock of dinghies hurries across the water,
Their sails are small triangles against the half-light of a storm.
