LONDON LUNCHTIMES

Discovered a few weeks back, (when Sian is currently redecorating the hallway) a small A6 sized sketchbook stuffed at the back of a bookcase. Inside the sketchbook drawings of London, Bloomsbury and Soho areas of town, in pen and ink.

Presumably made during my lunch breaks at the time

FLORAL RIDE

Quite wonderful it is to ride out on a Saturday morning for sixty minutes through the lanes and woods here about. This time of year the flowers of the Chilterns are at the almost end but still evident and I stop and stand my bike in the hedgerow to make some drawings.

HE WHO SEES THE PIPER HEARS THE TUNE

I was very fortunate to discover a host of treasures at the Dorchester Abbey this past weekend.  JOHN PIPER and THE CHURCH surveyed 70 years of his output. This show of delights was rammed into an impossibly small space in the South Transept. I would have moved some other stuff out to make more room.

A bonus was one of the Brass Bands rehearsing as part of the English Music Festival, more precisely the Jaguar Land Rover Band with Dave Lea Conducting. This was an extra treat for me, before heading home, full of Mr. Piper.

LIFE’S UPS AND DOWNS

Have gone to Life Drawing on and off the last twenty odd years you get to know when a particular session is just not going to go well. Those times when you just cannot put a line down right, and the situation grows worse. Going round and looking at everyone else’s works at the tea break helps little. Time to wash brushes and palette, swear under one’s breath and move on.

It maybe all in the mind, and ‘all in the mind’ might be the definition of drawing anyway.

THAT’S LIFE

MONDRIAN || NICHOLSON: IN PARALLEL

I was lucky enough to just get to the Courtauld to see exhibition explores the largely untold relationship between Piet Mondrian and Ben Nicholson during the 1930s. At this time the two artists were leading abstract art in Europe.

Nicholson and Mondrian's friendship culminated with Mondrian moving to London in 1938, at Nicholson's invitation, where they worked in neighbouring Hampstead studios at the centre of a community of the avant-garde.
